Norway and the European Union
EU Membership Referendums
Norway has held two referendums on the question of joining the European Union. The first was held in 1972, and the second in 1994. Both referendums resulted in a majority vote against joining the EU.
US-Norway Alliance
The United States has been a traditional ally of Norway for 70 years and has been its main guarantor of security. The two countries cooperate closely on a wide range of issues, including defense, trade, and energy.
Current EU Membership
The European Union currently has 27 member states, following the departure of the United Kingdom on 31 January 2020.
