Army of Darkness is a 1992 American dark fantasy comedy film directed, co-written, and co-edited by Sam Raimi. It is the third installment in the Evil Dead franchise. Bruce Campbell returns to the role of Ash, the handsome shotgun-toting chainsaw-armed department store employee.
Released in February 1992, the film follows Ash after being transported through a time portal to the Middle Ages. There, he finds himself trying to get back to the future by going on a quest to retrieve the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, a powerful book that can control the Deadites, evil undead creatures.
Army of Darkness received generally positive reviews from critics, with many praising Campbell's performance, Raimi's direction, and the film's humor. The film grossed over $115 million worldwide against a production budget of $13 million, making it a commercial success.
