Rosalind Berhalter: From Soccer Star to Wife of Controversial Coach
Early Life and Soccer Career
Rosalind Berhalter (née Santana) was born on July 21, 1973. She gained media attention as the wife of coach Gregg Berhalter, but her own soccer career was notable in its own right. Rosalind was a standout defender for the North Carolina Tar Heels, winning two national championships in 1993 and 1994.
Alleged Domestic Violence Incident
Before meeting Gregg, Rosalind was involved in a domestic violence incident with her then-boyfriend in 1991. The allegations were brought to light in 2022 by Danielle Reyna, whose son Gio had been a player on the US Men's National Team (USMNT) coached by Berhalter.
US Soccer Investigation
US Soccer opened an investigation into the incident after learning of the allegations. The investigation concluded that Gregg Berhalter had violated the organization's policy on domestic violence. Berhalter was suspended as coach of the USMNT, and his future with the team remains uncertain.
